SDS drill bits (from German data-end="142">Steck-Dreh-Sitz) are specialized tools designed for rotary hammers and hammer drills with an SDS chuck. They feature a grooved shank that allows for quick, tool-free mounting and efficient transmission of impact force, significantly better than traditional cylindrical bits. They are mainly used in construction and renovation work, especially where drilling in hard materials is required. Typical applications include drilling in concrete, reinforced concrete, stone, brick, and masonry, creating holes for anchors, plugs, and installations, through holes, and demolition work using SDS chisels. When working with SDS drill bits, basic safety rules must be followed. Appropriate protective equipment should be used, including safety goggles to protect against dust and debris, hearing protection due to high noise levels, work gloves to protect hands from vibrations and abrasions, and a dust mask – especially when working with mineral materials. Always operate with both hands and avoid contact with the rotating bit. Be aware of hidden wires and pipes in walls. Regular inspection and maintenance of tools are essential – worn, cracked, deformed, or broken bits must not be used.
